Navajo Pictorial Weaving Depicting a Central Corn Stalk (Tree of Life) with Colorful Birds and Storm Pattern Design Elements. This weaving is hand-dyed with vegetal colors.
This weaving was originally started by Navajo weaver, Bessie Sellers. Bessie passed away of old age and never finished her Storm Pattern rug. Her daughter, Nadine Nez, did not finish the weaving due to a tradition of not finishing a deceased family member’s weaving. The partial weaving remained rolled up until Bruce Nez, Nadine’s husband and son-in-law of Bessie, finished the weaving. Since Bruce was from a different clan, under the tradition he was allowed to complete the rug. This is a beautiful and creative weaving, honoring the final work of a talented weaver (bottom portion of the rug).
